Providing Opportunities in the North East

Newcastle United Foundation is an independent registered charity, supported by Newcastle United Football Club.

Trusted for more than a decade in the North East, the NUF provides meaningful opportunities to improve the lives of thousands of children, adults & the wider community. Through education, sport and many fundamental programmes, including digital STEM learning, they carve pathways for better futures in the northeast and look to give opportunities to those who need them.

Why a Learning Space?

The STEM room provides a unique learning environment for children and young people in their region to engage in STEM and digital technology-related activities, with the aim of increasing knowledge and interest to succeed in careers in the STEM, digital and esports sectors.

An array of sessions provides participants with access to equipment they would not usually be able to access in a school setting. These immersive experiences provide children and young people with a real-life taste of working in industries using digital technology without the need to leave the centre.

STEM sessions at NUCASTLE are available to schools free of charge for children in year 5+.

The future's bright in the North East

The Newcastle United Foundation is committed to a future that supports the community to be more active, learn new skills, become more employable and reach their full potential whilst placing digital learning at the heart of what they do through their esports programmes and state-of-the-art STEM facility.

In addition to the establishment of a digital infrastructure suitable for delivering a 21st-Century curriculum, NUF is committed to the development of ‘cutting-edge’ digital pedagogy through esports programme delivery to provide ‘NU futures’ to the community. In 2022 NUF opened the doors to its new building ‘NUCASTLE’, home of ‘NU Futures’ – a programme designed to transform the way young people transition from education to careers, using community outreach to target thousands of schoolchildren and young people across the North of Tyne.

The facility is now open seven days a week, combining its community space with the facilities. This includes activity and cycling studios, a specialist STEM room, a four-court sports hall, changing areas, event and meeting spaces, as well as offices and the esports room.

Bringing a state-of-the-art learning space to life

Meet - We met the NU Foundation to understand their goals for engaging the schools they work with in STEAM education to help bridge the skills gap in the UK.

Consultation - The NUF team were very keen to create a physical home for learning via some form of 'wow-factor' space, which enables them to bring together schools, adults, businesses and the whole community.

Concepts - Once the vision was clear, we developed a number of different options which they could consider, including the provision of visual concepts for a STEM Room that could be created in several different locations and on different scales. These encompassed suitable resources, training, furniture and graphic designs to create a full solution to meet their aims.

Proposal - Following feedback on the concepts, the most suitable solution was agreed upon and was then progressed into a fully detailed proposal to map out all the finer details of the solution.

Design - CreativeHUT liaised on the functionality and the look & feel of the space, and also led the design, production and installation of graphical artwork for all wall spaces to help bring the space to life and ensure the perfect environment for students and communities to learn & develop within.

Revise - This was a very iterative process. The NUF team were provided with initial design concepts on which they could feedback, to be amended and developed further, depending on their preferences for the design.

Install - Once all parties were in agreement, the CreativeHUT Team were onsite to oversee the installation of all wall graphics, and support the architect and building contractor teams, in line with the deadlines scheduled for everything to be ready for the launch.

Launch - CreativeHUT were delighted to see the great success of the launch, with many exciting opportunities in the pipeline.

Training - The NUF staff are involved in regular training to enable them to utilise all of the resources effectively and confidently with the end users, and will be continued to be supported into the future through in-person training from the CreativeHUT ‘STEAM Team’ and our eLearning platform.

Continued Support - We ensure that all our partners are forever supported in delivering what they need and we love building long-lasting relationships which continue to have a positive impact on student learning long into the future.

"The #STEM room at NUCASTLE provides a unique learning environment for children and young people in our region to engage in STEM and digital technology-related activities, with the aim of increasing knowledge and interest to succeed in careers in the STEM, digital and esports sectors."
